A Christmas quiz

Mostly because I wanted to blog but didn't know what to write about.

1. Eggnog or hot chocolate? I liked eggnog as a kid -- we always drank some while decorating the tree.  But it is far too rich for me now.  I LOVE hot chocolate, though.  Hot chocolate slimfast is pretty tasty, too.

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just set them under the tree? Always wrapped.  There were a few times growing up that Santa brought really big things. Those were unwrapped and left those in our basement.  They were saved for last.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white? White lights, all the way.  Though we live near a mansion and all the trees are different colors: orange, red, green, blue, purple, silver, fuchsia..........I would LOVE a fuchsia tree outside.

4. Do you hang mistletoe? nope. Thought about it this year, but didn't do anything about it.

5. When do you put your decorations up? Right after Thanksgiving. Earlier this season, a FB friend said, "Every time a Christmas tree is lit before Christmas, an elf drowns a baby reindeer."  I'm gonna have to agree.  Holidays should be kept in order. (Unless you're leaving town for Thanksgiving.  Then you can totally stay ahead of the game and put it up early.)

6. What is your favorite holiday dish? Um, there's not really anything I make at Christmas that I don't make year round.  Maybe soup? Homemade chicken noodle soup with homemade noodles. Mmm.  Soul food, right there.

7. Favorite holiday memory as a child? Meeting Santa at a gas station before we went to chop down our Christmas tree.

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? I was 12 and my little brother showed me the candy that the "elves" gave us, hidden in my parent's closet.

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve? Yes, and it's always pajamas.

10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree? This year, mostly alone.  I did the lights, the bulbs, the glitter snowflakes, then my favorite ornaments.  I let the kids place the rest the next morning.

11. Snow! Love it or dread it? Love it to look at and play in.  Hate it for driving.

12. Can you ice skate? Yes, though it's been 10 years, so maybe no........

13. Do you remember your favorite gift? Yes, I do.  I wrote about getting a sleigh bell a few years ago.

14. What's the most important thing about the holidays for you? Teaching my children about Christ, giving, and being with family.

15. What is your favorite holiday dessert?  Mint M&Ms.

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? I haven't made many traditions with my own family yet.  Every other year we travel back to Kansas/Missouri to be with our parents and it's hard to do the same things each year when that happens.  I wanted to go caroling, but it's been bitterly cold here and I just can't make my kids go out in it if they don't have to.  I want to have Christmas books that we read each night, or an advent calendar with scripture verses or........something.  What are YOUR traditions? Can I borrow some of them?

17. What tops your tree? A golden star.

18. Which do you prefer: giving or receiving? Since becoming a mother I have discovered the joy of getting your children something they REALLY want and the joy on their faces is all the gift I need. But I like receiving, too. :o)

19. Candy canes: yuck or yum? not really a fan.

20. Favorite Christmas movie? White Christmas, The Family Stone

21. Saddest Christmas song? I'm changing this question to "Worst Christmas song."  Everyone knows the saddest one is Christmas Shoes.  But worst might be "Last Christmas" or "Do you hear what I hear?" (Martina McBride's version is the only one I can tolerate.)  Though to be fair, I have not heard any of Justin Beiber's Christmas album.  I'd wager quite a bit of money that the worst Christmas song is on that CD.

22. What is your favorite Christmas song? I love The First Noel, O Holy Night, Carol of the Bells, Silver Bells........I love a LOT of Christmas songs.  Basically anything on the piano. But as much as I love it, I don't listen to Christmas music before Thanksgiving.  Holidays should be kept in order.

Feel free to play along!!!!!

I like the Nonfat eggnog. It's still yummy but not as thick or rich.

I think Christmas Shoes is the worst Christmas song! Can't stand it! I change the station whenever it comes on. (And I totally stock up on the mint M&Ms.)

While I agree that Christmas Shoes is sad, I would have to say that the saddest song is Bring Him Home Santa. It's a little girl asking Santa to stop in Iraq(?) & pick up her daddy. We heard this about a week or 2 before Scott left for Afghanistan & I bawled through the whole thing! Who writes these?! Soldiers & dying moms? It's horrible! Christmas is supposed to be about joy!!!

Ok, I've thought about it, and a dying mom is definitely sadder. The soldier one just hit really close to home for me. Either way, I hate them both!

I laughed at the Christmas song question. I've been teasing my spouse about his favorite Christmas song- it's that depressing "Christmastime is Here" song by the Peanuts. You know, the Charlie Brown Christmas song? I swear, only my spouse would choose the most depressing song to love. Christmas Shoes is super cheesy (and I will embarrassedly admit it makes me tear up unbidden!)

What a fun meme.....I detest eggnog, I can't handle the slime I feel when I drink it. And we always had wrapped gifts as well. I think that was part of the excitment was unwrapping the gifts!
