fruit from the random tree

Sometimes, I wish I didn't have such a strict moral compass. Specifically when it comes to movies. There are always a ton of movies I'd love to see if they weren't rated R. Precious, Up in the Air, The Brothers......and the list goes on.

I'm still waiting to see The Blind Side and Invictus. Both hold celebrity crushes for me -- Sandra Bullock and Matt Damon. And I wanna see Sherlock Holmes, too.

~~~~~~
The other day I awoke from a catnap on the couch to the sound of the front door closing. The Hulk was just coming in. I said, "Hulk, please don't open the door. It's too cold."
"But I wanna eat snow," he told me.
Today I saw some kind of red mark near his mouth and asked if he had an owie. "Yeah, the bad guys punched me right der so I gotta owie."
~~~~~~

Spiderman saw some "Chuck E. Cheese" string cheese in the store today. He started singing the "where a kid can be a kid" theme song. Then he said, "Mom, maybe we should go to Chuck E. Cheese since I'm a kid."

Pretty sound logic, I suppose.

~~~~~~
I can not eat enough food lately. I've done a pretty good job with my weight gain this pregnancy. (Not that I was trying. I ate what I wanted, when I wanted, and it's worked out pretty well.) But the last week or so........GIMME GIMME GIMME!!!!! I eat and snack all day. I have a feeling that this last 6 weeks will more than make up for the minimal weight gain in the previous 34.
~~~~~~

Project Runway started. That show makes me happy. It also makes me think I could be friends with Heidi Klum.

~~~~~~
We'll be getting our tax return in a few weeks and are hoping to do something about our flooring. We have this disgusting brown carpet circa 1991 and have been trying to get rid of it ever since we moved it. At first we were thinking laminate, then possibly new carpet. But we have hardwood floors underneath, and now we're thinking we should just refinish them. They aren't wonderfully handcrafted works of art, but they are hardwood floors.
Have you refinished floors? Did you do it yourself? Was it easy? Was it cheap? Would you do it in bedrooms?
~~~~~~

Ironic happenstance of the day: Playlist.com had a feature available for months where you could download your playlist to Windows Media Player. My phone is able to take playlists from Windows Media Player and put them on my phone. By the time I discovered what I could do, we no longer had Windows on our computer. Today I called a friend to see if I could temporarily put my playlist on her computer so I could put it on my phone. She said sure. I checked with Playlist.com just to be sure........

And they no longer have that feature available.

Of course.

~~~~~~
My kitchen floor needs to be mopped sumpin' fierce. But I can't bring myself to do it because I know it'll need it within 24 hours anyway. The dogs stay outside in the middy backyard all day and then come in at night. They track mud and dirt everywhere. So what's the point of mopping?
We did our floors in our last house. Pros: 1.Cleaning up messes is awesome compared to doing the same thing with carpet. 2. I love the look!
Cons: 1. The dust from the sanding is HORRIBLE and very hard to contain to the room you're doing. You have to completely seal it off and still expect some leakage, but the job itself isn't bad. 2. It's cold, period (unless you have radiant heat under it).
There, my two- or five - cents.
p.s. You're getting so close! Hope all goes well with the baby!
I am right there with you on the movies. It just makes me sad that there are so many out there I want to see but won't because of the rating.
I still need to see the Blindside...I'm not sure I'll see Invictus.
I would love new carpeting but that's not happening. I don't know that I would do hardwood in a bedroom unless I lived in a really warm climate but that's just me.
And I hate mopping the floor. It usually only gets done once a week if that but I've been trying to "maintain" so I just swiffered this morning.
Hi! I followed you over from Rachel's blog. Cute, cute posts!
My husband and I laid laminate throughout the majority of our house including our master bedroom. I don't know that "easy" is the best way to describe it, but it was definitely worth doing ourselves for the money we saved. We only had one night that nearly ended our marriage when I threw a bucket of "spacers" at my husband. He forgave me and our floor is beautiful. The kids ride their bikes inside (to my dismay)and it's pretty easy to clean. Although they need to be cleaned more often as dust and cat hair balls seem to collect and blow across the floor whenever the heater kicks in. Vacuuming once a week was certainly easier.
Hope that isn't entirely unhelpful!
We need new floors. I want hardwood. Splenda wants carpet. We are at an impasse, so we sit looking at our ugly carpet.
i hate when they add inappropriate stuff in movies just to be edgy. it has nothing to do with the story!!
I have one word that will change your life (movie-wise): ClearPlay. I don't know if you've heard of it, but it's a company where you buy a special DVD player (about 60 bucks), and it has a USB drive on it. You have to subscribe to the service (only like $6 a month) and you download their filters and use it when you watch a movie. It mutes language but also takes out entire scenes that are inappropriate. You can set it to be as strict or not as you want, and there are filters for practically every movie out there. Unlike edited movies, it's completely legal because they're not changing any actual movies and you still use your own DVDs, it's just like automatically skipping the bad parts.
Hopefully that wasn't too much of a novel! But we have it and absolutely LOVE it. We can watch almost any movie we want and not feel like we're compromising our values. We just wait for movies to come out on DVD and watch them with Clearplay. Seriously check it out! They even sell the players at places like Macey's and Seagull book, usually with a free 6 month membership.
Definately finish the hardwood. If the wood isn't that pretty, go with a darker finish. Don't scrimp on the Urethane on top- get the GOOD stuff from a real wood floor place (no Ho Depo products).
Do NOT, under any circumstances, finish the floors while pregnant. There will be some smells. Ideally, you'd be out of the house completely with the kids while finishing them. You will need to rent good equipment. Call your local equipment rental place and ask for pricing and time estimates. Watch everything you can on YouTube about how to do it right before tackling it.
It's not a HARD job but is labor and mess intensive- that's partly why it adds value to your house.
Just read the clearplay comment. They work, but they are junk. There is a warranty, so that is slightly redeeming.
We have hardwood in our living room and kitchen and I miss the carpet in the living room. It's not really conducive to rolling around on the floor and playing with kids.
Girl, your moral compass is stronger than mine. (I blame my flagrant "R" viewing on my parents...so what if I'm 38 years old now!)
Ooo, Project Runway...a guilty pleasure. Since we got rid of the TV, I'm a Hulu girl. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for letting me know it's back on!
Yes, let's be friends with Heidi Klum, shall we? I love that shoe too. It makes me want to create!
I love our ClearPlay - although Rachel's right, the player itself (though it edits beautifully) isn't the greatest quality. BUT customer service is great and they fix everything.
WORTH. IT.
Random is my favorite!
I loved both Invictus and the Blind Side, and I would totally see Precious if I saw r rated movies. I sometimes think that if I had that many more movies to choose from I might never leave the house at all.
The BYU International Cinema shows edited foreign films for free, every week, and they are fantastic. I just printed the schedule yesterday, and we are excited to see Slumdog Millionaire the beginning of March. I also saw Delicatessen and Amelie there, which changed my perception of movies. Maybe we can swap babysitting nights, 'cause I'd like to see more of them.
I have never refinished wood floors, but I have wood floors adn would liek to refinish them sometime. My friend did it adn they turned out great. It took her acouple of days to do her living room. She rented a sander form Hoem Depot I think.
And I want wood floors in my bedrooms. I think wood floors look great anywhere, but I would add a large rug to the bedrooms and living room just for the warmth and echo factor. Rugs are much cheaper to replace than carpet. I hate carpet. It only looks good for a littel while, then it starts to untwist adn get stained. Let me know if you refinish the floors adn tell me how hard it was so i'll be prepared for mine.
Mopping is SO overrated.
I have been eating everything in sight for the last few weeks. And my weight proves it. Sigh.
I don't know anything about refinishing floors, but I do know that I decided to just recarpet the bedroom. I was hoping the floor underneath (I knew it had to be hardwood because my house was built in 1920) but someone had painted it blue. BLUE! What is that about?
Anyway, one of my daughter's rooms still has hardwoods and I love it. Too bad about the other one with blue wood. We got a nice carpet instead.
I'd be tempted to refinish the wood floors unless you find too much damage.
I may just be ready to settle for laminate in our house instead of waiting until we have the money for hardwood. Plus with our dogs, it'd scratch less. I think I have Luvpilot talked into it. Now I just need to get prices.
